"The Ninety-second Annual Meeting and the Thirty-third Representative Assembly of the National Education Association met in New York City, June 27- July 2, 1954. The business of the Association was transacted by 4978 delegates from local and state associations---the largest Assembly in the Association's history. The theme of the convention was "We hold these truths." This fitted well into the jointly sponsored meetings with the United Nations. The guided tours thru the United Nations Headquarters and the meetings held there were a leading feature of the convention. Thru open meetings of committees and commissions and a wide variety of discussion groups, the Association continued its policy of promoting the widest possible participation in its affairs. New York City Highlights, as given in the NEA Journal for September 1954, page 330 are: The largest Representative Assembly in the Association's history---almost 5000 registered delegates. The deep interest in the United Nations; on one day 5389 attended meetings held in the UN and took guided tours---a new record for UN. The efficient and friendly functioning of the NEA Representative Assembly under the skilled leadership of President William A. Early. The spontaneous response to the building fund for the NEA Educational Center---some 580 new life members. The general appreciation of delegates and members for the fine accommodations in Madison Square Garden and in the various hotels. The Classroom Teachers Night, including a banquet attended by more than 2100 educators and friends followed by a pageant, "Through Freedom's Door," presented by the New York City Schools under the direction of Evelyn Konigsberg, chairman. The participation of Future Teachers of America, including their own meetings, their second Notables dinner, and recognition as honor guests at the Celebrities dinner.
